Chelsea: art, gardens and the King’s Road

Chelsea’s one of those London neighbourhoods that’s easy to fall for. It’s got the big-name King’s Road, garden squares lined with red-brick mansion blocks, and the Thames on its doorstep along Chelsea Embankment. It’s polished, sure, but there’s plenty to do that won’t cost you much at all.

Start at Sloane Square and you’re right by the Royal Court Theatre, which has been putting on bold new writing for decades. A couple of minutes away, the Saatchi Gallery sits in the old Duke of York’s HQ just off the King’s Road, and a lot of its exhibitions are free to walk in. From there, the King’s Road runs west, with independent shops, cafés and plenty of spots for a long lunch.

Head down towards the river and you’ll find the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the Chelsea Pensioners since the 17th century. Every May its grounds host the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, which is the big date in the gardening calendar. Right next door, Chelsea Physic Garden has been growing medicinal plants since 1673. It’s a lovely, quiet four acres by the Thames, with tickets from about £5 to £15. The National Army Museum’s just along Royal Hospital Road too, and it’s a good shout for a rainy afternoon.

Music lovers should know about Cadogan Hall, just off Sloane Square on the Belgravia side. It’s home to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and hosts classical, jazz and folk nights through the year. And if you’re after fireworks or a riverside stroll, Battersea Park is just over Chelsea Bridge.

We’ll keep this page fresh with what’s coming up in and around Chelsea, so it’s worth checking back before you plan a day out.
