South Kensington

South Kensington: museums, music and Exhibition Road

South Kensington packs more world-class culture into a few streets than most cities manage in total. It’s the place to come for a rainy day, a family outing or a big night of music, and you can do the lot on foot from South Kensington station.

Exhibition Road is the heart of it. The Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the V&A all sit within a few minutes of each other. The Natural History Museum’s galleries are free to explore, and the Science Museum’s free too, though you’ll need to book a free ticket ahead. The V&A is brilliant for design, fashion and art, and it’s easy to lose a whole afternoon there. Imperial College London is right in the middle of it all, and its campus often joins in with public talks and festivals.

Walk up to Kensington Gore and you’ll reach the Royal Albert Hall, opened by Queen Victoria in 1871 and home of the BBC Proms every summer. It hosts everything from classical concerts and film nights to comedy and festival celebrations. The Royal College of Music is just behind it, and its students and staff put on concerts through the year.

Cross the road into Kensington Gardens and you’re a short stroll from the Serpentine Galleries, which show contemporary art in the park. Head west along Kensington High Street and you’ll find the Design Museum, another easy add-on to a South Ken day.

Around the station, there are plenty of cafés, bakeries and restaurants for a break between museums. We’ll keep this page updated with what’s on nearby, so check back when you’re planning your next visit.
