West Brompton & Chelsea Harbour: from World’s End to the river

SW10 is the laid-back, riverside end of Chelsea. It stretches from West Brompton down through World’s End to Lots Road and Chelsea Harbour, and it’s a lovely part of town to explore on foot, with pastel terraces, local pubs and the Thames never far away.

Start in the north at Brompton Cemetery. It’s one of London’s ‘Magnificent Seven’ Victorian cemeteries and is looked after by the Royal Parks. Its long avenues of lime trees, grand colonnades and wildflower patches make it a calm spot for a walk, and there’s a café at the north end. Stamford Bridge is right next door, so on match days the whole area hums with Chelsea fans.

Head south and you’ll reach World’s End, where the King’s Road bends west. This stretch has a strong independent streak, with design shops, cafés and neighbourhood restaurants. Keep going towards the river and you’ll find Lots Road, home to the landmark old Lots Road Power Station by Chelsea Creek, and little Cremorne Gardens. The gardens are a riverside green space on the site of the famous Victorian pleasure gardens, with views up and down the Thames.

Chelsea Harbour itself is a smart marina development with riverside walks and the Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. It’s packed with interior design showrooms and is open on weekdays, making it a great place to browse fabrics, furniture and lighting for inspiration.

The Finborough Theatre is just up the road at the Earl’s Court end, putting on new writing and rediscovered plays in an intimate room, with tickets usually from about £20. And for big nights out, Battersea Park is just across the river. We’ll keep this page updated with what’s on nearby.
